Agroecological Garden 2023

Balance of the Agroecological Garden at Citromax: Efficient Integration of Organic Waste for Sustainable Production

Through our Organic Valorization Program at Citromax, we have established a robust agroecological garden that not only optimizes the management of organic waste but also produces healthy food. This extensive garden, spanning an area of 1200m2, hosts over 10 varieties of aromatic plants and 28 species of seasonal vegetables. Within it, a virtuous cycle is established by using compost derived from organic waste generated in the kitchen of the Acheral Plant as the main substrate.

From June to October 2023, the garden, teeming with various seasonal vegetables, supplied a total of 2125 kg of essential products to the company’s kitchen, which caters to over 50 people daily.

However, the agroecological garden goes beyond its productive function, becoming a prominent space for environmental education and establishing connections with various territorial actors. In this regard, throughout 2023, we carried out a series of significant activities:

  • We hosted visits from 10 educational and social institutions, providing them with the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the composting process and vegetable cultivation. Additionally, we shared knowledge about the benefits of agroecology and the principles of circular economy.
  • We expanded the number of composters using recyclable materials generated throughout our value chain. Currently, 5 composters are in operation, dedicated to the organic fraction of urban solid waste (FORSU) from the kitchen of the Acheral Plant.
  • We distributed 1135 kg of fresh vegetables to community kitchens, schools, and among our collaborators, significantly contributing to improving food security and nutrition in local communities.
  • We actively participated in four relevant events where we shared our experience and knowledge in organic valorization.

We are convinced of its importance in generating a positive impact on the environment and society as a whole, while promoting a culture rooted in food sustainability and social responsibility. We express our gratitude to all individuals and institutions that have accompanied and supported us on this journey and invite them to continue sharing and learning together.
